I Got My "Fix" Today...(Aug. 28)

Earlier this week, things got a bit hectic. Overwhelming, to be precise! Meetings, site visits, deadlines, committee stuff, AutoCAD issues...... and then the phone call came from Chris Lockhart on Thursday afternoon. He said (I'm paraphrasing, of course) "Hey, some of the folks at The Grove Church were planning on doing something this Saturday, and we though of heading over to the DeLee Project. Do you mind?"  Mind? My spirits lifted, and  I must have shouted my response into the phone right back at him, "Yeah, let's do it"! I was fired up! Bring it on!!

For those who have been involved in any Fuller Center projects and have seen the positive impact that the gift of home repairs can make on a family and the volunteers involved,   you will understand what I'm about to say. I go in a state of withdrawal when there is no Fuller Center stuff happening on a weekend.  Last  summer when we were repairing Mrs. Miller's home almost on a weekly basis, I was on a constant high! This weekend, working on the DeLee Residence I got my "fix", so I'm probably good for another week or two!

I've been hoping and praying that we can get started on the construction of this home soon (The Legion Road Project). Here's the history in a condensed version - The house located at 135 Legion Road, suffered from a fire a few years ago and it has been sitting there abandoned and in disrepair. The owner agreed to donate the property to The Fuller Center, so that it can be renovated and  be ready for a deserving family. In February, 2010 we started  with some of the general cleaning up of the property by cutting down all of the overgrown vegetation, removing all the debris  from inside, removing the damaged roof and pretty much gutted the entire building, leaving only the exterior concrete block walls intact.

During the donation process, we uncovered an outstanding debt that had to be paid off. That is the reason the team had to back off from this project and focus on others. Through a separate fund-raising effort by the property owner, the debt has been negotiated and paid off.  Now we are back on The Legion Road Project stronger than ever! This is what the structure looked like after the cleanup way back in March, and more recently, by Noon on Saturday, August 28th! For more information about this project go to www.projectmcdonough.com or look us up on Face Book under Henry County Fuller Center for Housing, Inc.

The Delee Family is scheduled to move into this completed home before Thanksgiving! Work will continue on this project starting this weekend as we continue to raise more funds to purchase building materials.  The next work day is scheduled for Saturday, September 18, 2010 and the next  major phase of construction is scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 25, 2010. We plan on getting the first floor, second floor, roof  framed and the entire structure dryed-in during that week. We can do it with your help!!!

What We Need:
Donations - $$$ and in-kind donations
Framing materials - 2x4's, 2 x10's, 2x12's, Batts/Blown Insulation, 3/4" Plywood, Joist hangers, Nails, Screws,
Volunteers - Framers, masons, electricians, plumbers, HVAC installers, general helpers,

I'm looking forward to completing this project for a number of reasons. Most importantly, it will  serve a family in need in accordance with the basic mission of Millard Fuller's founding principles. It will be our first project  under the new name of  the Henry County Fuller Center, and it will hopefully be the first EarthCraft Certified Remodeled Project done with local partnerships of volunteers within Henry County (Atlanta Fuller Center already has one on the books).

So,  in case you are wondering where I get my high - This is my "Fix" (one of them, at least) . Join us at the Henry County Fuller Center for Housing, Inc. and get your "fix"!

  1. I agree! You get a "High" helping others. I enjoyed working Saturday and seeing my boys give back to the community. Shane you are a great guy to work with. Duane and I both enjoyed working with everyone and we plan on helping as much as we can until the house is completed.

  2. Shawn did not mean to make the above post anonymous! We are proud of the boys and their willingness to help and give back to the community. Hudson and Austin both enjoyed the time and are looking forward to doing it again, although Austin had to go to the doctor with a terrible case of poison ivy. His eye was swollen almost shut by Monday morning. A shot from the Dr. dried it up a lot though, and that didn't slow down his willingness to help. We are so happy to be involved in the Fuller Center project and having the chance for the boys to learn about giving back to the community is a blessing and a tremendous reward for us. May God bless all of your efforts!
